🥟 Apr 7–13: New neighbor night in Jackson Heights

Hey neighbor,

Jackson Heights really said, “let’s keep things interesting” this week.

First, a big thank you to Emily Moore for her support for this newsletter. She also gave a nod to Just Made 4 U on 37th Ave and 80th which is a bright, casual spot full of good options like smoothies, salads, crepes, and sandwiches that will not slow you down. You can join Emily in supporting the newsletter and receive additional perks while you're at it by signing up here.

Meanwhile, you may have also seen this mysterious plaque on 84th Street and 35th Ave:

Turns out it is a joke sign you can buy online. Still, it gave a few of us a good pause and a laugh!

But the biggest story this week is about courage. Local pizzeria owner Louie Suljovic jumped in to stop a dangerous situation and protect the people inside his shop. Quick thinking, and a reminder that this neighborhood looks out for each other.

And if you like a little beauty with your news, we caught a moody cloudy sky over Northern Boulevard and even spotted some custom Jackson Heights sneakers out in the wild.

Oh, and one more thing. Flushing Town Hall is giving away two free tickets to a global music night this Saturday. Dancing, live bands, and a mashup finale where anything can happen. First person to reply to this email wins them!

Alright, time to make plans... Here is what else is happening around Jackson Heights this week.

Hey neighbor, Something’s in the air… and no, it’s not just pollen (although, yes, definitely that too). 🌸 The neighborhood is waking up. Flowers are making their annual comeback tour, trees are showing off a little, and 37th Avenue has officially slowed down to “let’s just take a lap” speed. You can feel it—spring has entered the chat. Suddenly, every errand feels optional and every walk feels like a scene. Photo Credit: Lo Ro And last night had a bit of that same energy. Hey neighbor! You know what I love about this neighborhood? You can sit down at a restaurant with five people you have never met, and by the time the check comes you are making plans to hang out again. That is basically what happened at last week's Dinner Club. Several tables out across Jackson Heights, and then everyone converged at Nancy Blake's afterwards. Photos below. If that sounds like your kind of night, our next Dinner Club is Tuesday, April 28th. Sign up at...

Hey neighbor! If you were anywhere around the neighborhood last week, you probably caught the energy. Hundreds of henna tables lining the streets, families shopping for holiday outfits, incense in the air, Bollywood music on the next block. It was Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, and Jackson Heights was celebrating in the most Jackson Heights way possible. Photo credit: Taurat Hossain On the civic side, Thursday's monthly Community Board 3 meeting ran past 10pm and...
