🥟 Dec 2-8: Giving Tuesday, Santa Rides, Neighbors Unite in Jackson Heights

Hey neighbor!

Hope you are doing well and staying warm. Our “new in the neighborhood” meetup last week was one of those moments that reminds you why we live in such a special place. We met some wonderful new locals and heard from community champions who pour so much heart into this neighborhood. The energy in the room felt very… Jackson Heights. Welcoming. Hopeful. A little magical even.

If you are new to the area or simply love connecting with people, you are invited to our next one on MLK Day, Monday 19 January at 6pm (RSVP here). Newcomers get first dibs, but longtime residents are welcome too if space allows.

Speaking of neighborhood magic - have you seen the newly redone mural at 75th & 37th, between Food Dynasty and Romeo’s? The artist, Annabelle Popa, was born and raised right here in JH, and the refresh looks fantastic.

And mark your calendar: a brand new mural is being unveiled this Friday the 13th at noon, on 84th St & Roosevelt Ave, thanks to the JH Mural Project. Public art is really having a moment in the neighborhood!

Now since today is Giving Tuesday,, it felt like the perfect moment to shine a light on some local groups doing real, meaningful work around our neighborhood. After this short list, we will jump right into this week’s events.

  • Chhaya CDC: Support for South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities through housing stability, financial counseling, economic empowerment, and organizing. (donate page)
  • The Jackson Heights Beautification Group: The quiet heroes behind our trees, gardens, cleanup efforts, local history, and the JH Growers Market (donate)
  • Queens Together: Food relief powered by Queens restaurants. They feed neighbors, uplift small businesses, and host the International Food Expo on Dec 8. (donate / ticket info)
  • New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE): Essential support for immigrant workers, from rights education to job training to legal help. They meet people where they are (donate)
  • Epicenter NYC: Local journalism with soul. Reporting, resources, mutual aid, cultural coverage, and hands-on help for neighbors navigating city life. (donate)
  • 34th Avenue Open Streets Coalition: The volunteer crew that keeps 34th Ave lively, safe, and full of daily programming. Community magic in motion (donate)
  • Love Wins NYC: A warm, volunteer-led food pantry focused on LGBTQ+ neighbors, immigrants, and anyone who needs support. Pure heart (donate)
  • JH Mural Project: Community-led public art initiative that creates murals celebrating the diversity of Jackson Heights and Queens (donate here or here)
  • Make the Road New York: A powerhouse for immigrant justice, offering legal services, tenant support, worker advocacy, and community organizing.

Feeling a little boost of neighborhood spirit after that list? Perfect timing. Here are some winter events to enjoy.

🚨 STOP THE PRESS.
PUT DOWN THE BAGEL 🥯
THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
The Queens Together International Food Expo is happening THIS WEEK...

... and if you miss it, your future self will absolutely judge you.

On Monday, December 8, the New York Hall of Science is transforming into the unofficial Embassy of Queens: one room, dozens of restaurants, and enough global flavor to make your passport feel insecure.

This is not your cousin’s “food festival” where someone hands you a sad mini empanada and calls it a day. Nope. This is Queens in full technicolor:

• Chefs cooking like they’re trying to win your heart, your loyalty, and possibly your WhatsApp number.

• Live music that feels like the soundtrack to the borough’s origin story.

• Drinks from QNSY, Alewife, Neir’s Tavern... basically the Avengers of local booze.

And because Queens never does anything halfway, every ticket sold goes straight into feeding neighbors and keeping our mom-and-pop restaurants alive. This is community power disguised as a party.

The mastermind pulling the strings?

Jonathan Forgash, human booster rocket for the Queens food scene. If you’ve ever eaten well in this borough, odds are he had something to do with it.

If you want a preview, check out Laura Siciliano-Rosen’s gorgeous feature in Eats in Queens. - but honestly, just get the ticket.

🎟️ Buy 4, get the 5th free... yes, really.

→ Get your tickets at queenstogether.org

Bring your appetite.

Bring your friends.

Bring that one neighbor who says they “haven’t explored Queens yet” and fix that immediately.

See you there!

Hey neighbor… Winter is still doing its thing, but the neighborhood is busy! A new tea house has opened on 37th Ave and 76th Street, a Qahwah Valley coffee house is coming soon, and Raising Cane’s is opening this week on 82nd Street in the former bank building (see more details in the events below). With Restaurant Week now underway (check out our full guide here), there are plenty of reasons to step inside somewhere warm and eat well. Despite the weather, we also had a great Newcomer Meetup...

Hey you. Yes, you, reading the neighborhood email! If you are new to Jackson Heights, new-ish, or just wondering how everyone else seems to know each other, you are in the right place. Our newcomer meetup is happening this Monday, and it is all about meeting kind humans and picking up local wisdom. This one will have an artsy twist, with the folks from the Jackson Heights Mural project joining us. Speaking of neighbors and creative projects, this week we also launched Voices of Jackson...

Hey neighbor, It's a new year, we've got a new mayor in town, and yes - the old MetroCards are officially out. 2026 showed up, and Jackson Heights welcomed it like an old friend. Happy Noon Year kicked things off early with a daytime party full of music, dancing, kids, and parents pretending they were “just supervising.” It was such a joyful scene that it even got love from CBS news: Then later that night, wificita and I wondered over to the Queensboro and before we knew it, dinner turned...
