🥟 Jun 23-29: Vote, cheer, eat in Jackson Heights

Hey neighbor,

Today is Primary Election Day, which means Jackson Heights gets to do one of its favorite things. Have strong opinions, then go vote on them. Polls are open from 6am to 9pm, and if you are on line at 9pm, you can still vote. You can check your polling place and see a sample ballot by plugging in your address here.

Meanwhile, the World Cup is in full swing, and our little corner of Queens is already showing why it is called the World’s Borough. The Jackson Heights opening game watch party got written up in the Queens Eagle, with neighbors gathering to cheer, compare jerseys, and probably explain offside to at least one confused friend.

And one last little nudge. Last call for Dinner Club is this Sunday evening. It’s happening next Tuesday, and the idea is simple. You sign up, we match you with a small group of neighbors, and you all meet at a local restaurant. Simple. Friendly. Delicious. Much easier than trying to make new friends by hovering near the mangoes at Patel Brothers → Grab your spot here before signups close Sunday evening. Here are a few photos from our most recent one last month:

Alright, so that's democracy, soccer and dinner with neighbors covered. Now let’s get into what’s happening around the neighborhood.

Hey neighbor, One of my favorite things about Jackson Heights is how the neighborhood can look completely different depending on where you’re standing. Local artist Bonnie Astor recently shared paintings of Travers Park and the view from her rooftop, and they capture something familiar: trees and brick buildings up close, the Manhattan skyline hovering in the distance, and all those little rooftops in between. It’s a nice reminder to occasionally look up from whatever we’re doing. There will...

Hey neighbor, This past neighborhood was full of music, dancing, food, and community spirit. The first South Asian Unity Parade filled 37th Avenue with color and celebration. Simultaneously on 34th avenue, Jackson Heights Day brought activities, vendors, and DJs to five whole blocks. Our streets had more moves than most of us do before our morning coffee. Baile FolklĂłrico dancers at Jackson Heights Day The celebrations continued at World Borough Bookstore, which marked its third anniversary.,...
