Hey neighbor, If there’s one thing this neighborhood is never short on, it’s opinions, restaurants, and people trying to get through Roosevelt Ave station. Conveniently, all three came up this week. First up, last week’s Dinner Club was one of my favorites so far. We sent small groups out to Armondo’s, Plaka, and Bistro Eloise, with a couple of dinners happening just across the neighborhood line in East Elmhurst. Afterward, everyone met up at Cassidy’s, turning three separate dinners into one big neighborhood night out. Want to join the next one? RSVPs are already open for our next one on Tuesday October 20th. Also this week, the elevator replacement at Roosevelt Ave / Jackson Heights station is complete. All four elevators have now been replaced, which is very welcome news for anyone navigating the station with a stroller, suitcase, wheelchair, or tired legs. Jackson Heights also got some big-screen attention. Frederick Wiseman’s three-hour documentary In Jackson Heights was recently screened at the Maysles Documentary Center and reviewed by the Columbia Spectator. Three hours may sound long, but then again, so can a trip through Roosevelt Ave station at rush hour. Speaking of which, this week’s poll: How many riders do you think pass through Roosevelt Ave / Jackson Heights station each year? 7 million And thank you to everyone who voted in last week’s “which street would you eat on forever?” poll. 37th Ave won comfortably with 67% of the vote. Several readers also pointed out one rather obvious omission: Northern Boulevard. Fair point. I clearly should not be designing polls while hungry! One quick note before we get to the good stuff. Several events were rescheduled last weekend because of the weather, so it’s worth checking with organizers before heading out. Times and locations can sometimes change at the last minute. Now, elevators are working, October dinner plans are brewing, and hopefully the weather behaves itself. Hey neighbor! đź‘‹ First things first. Want to meet some new neighbors over a delicious meal? Our next Dinner Club is Tuesday, October 20, and this is your last chance to join! We match you with five other neighbors for dinner at a local restaurant. No speeches, no name games, just six people sharing a table and plenty of laughs. Afterwards, all the groups get together for a casual drink. It's a pretty lovely way to turn strangers into familiar faces. Come join us! Speaking of meeting neighbors,...
Hey neighbor, This week’s neighborhood news has a little bit of everything: generosity, pandebono, mysterious storefront activity, pen pals, and one sad goodbye. Some of you may know New York Turk, the social media creator who visits struggling restaurants and tries to give them a boost. He’s been dealing with serious health issues lately, and apparently he was not keen on accepting help himself. The team at nearby Greek restaurant Plaka decided to ignore that part. They started a GoFundMe...
Hey neighbor, First, I owe you an answer. A few weeks ago, we asked which came first, the 7 train reaching Jackson Heights or LaGuardia Airport opening. Then the poll formatting got a little wonky, some of the choices disappeared, and I somehow forgot to reveal the answer the following week too. Oops! So, finally: the 7 train came first! It reached Jackson Heights in 1917, more than 20 years before LaGuardia Airport opened. Now for a question that might cause even more disagreement: if you...
